Key Points
Carex pendula, commonly known as Pendulous Sedge, is a tall and graceful evergreen sedge native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Renowned for its elegant, arching flower spikes and lush green foliage, it is a versatile plant that thrives in a variety of damp and shaded environments.
This robust perennial can grow up to 1.2–1.8 metres (4–6 feet) in height, forming dense clumps of long, strap-like leaves that are rich green and slightly glossy. The leaves emerge from a tufted base, creating a fountain-like appearance that adds texture and movement to the landscape.
In late spring to early summer, Carex pendula produces tall stems topped with pendulous, tassel-like flower spikes. These spikes, which can reach lengths of 20–50 cm (8–20 inches), are greenish at first and gradually mature to brown. The plant's flowering display provides an elegant architectural feature, while the seeds attract birds and other wildlife in autumn and winter.
Pendulous Sedge thrives in full sun to deep shade and prefers moist, fertile soil, making it ideal for woodland gardens, stream banks, pond margins, and damp meadows. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as adequate moisture is maintained. Hardy in UK conditions, it is frost-resistant and performs well in temperate climates.
Propagation is straightforward and can be achieved by division in spring or autumn or by collecting and sowing its seeds. Once established, the plant is low-maintenance, but it has a tendency to self-seed prolifically, which may require management in smaller garden spaces.
In addition to its ornamental value, Carex pendula is highly effective for erosion control and stabilising soil along water margins. Its dense clumps provide excellent habitat for small animals and insects, enhancing the ecological value of the areas where it is planted.
With its elegant form, striking flower spikes, and adaptability to various conditions, Carex pendula is a reliable choice for adding height and structure to gardens, particularly in shaded or damp areas. However, care should be taken to manage its spread, especially in naturalised settings, where it can become dominant if not monitored.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
