Key Points
Cyperus alternifolius fuscus, commonly known as the Umbrella Palm, is a striking aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial sedge that adds an exotic touch to ponds, water gardens, and damp landscapes. This variety is a darker-leaved form of the classic Cyperus alternifolius, with its foliage and stems featuring deeper green or bronze tones, enhancing its ornamental appeal.
The plant grows to a height of 60–120 cm (2–4 feet) and forms clumps of slender, upright stems topped with a distinctive whorl of narrow, arching leaf bracts. This umbrella-like arrangement of foliage gives the plant its common name and creates a dramatic, architectural silhouette. The leaves and stems of the fuscus variety have a slightly richer, darker hue compared to the typical species, making it a standout feature in both naturalistic and formal water gardens.
During summer, the plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers clustered near the base of the leaf bracts. These flowers, while not showy, add a subtle charm and can develop into small seed heads.
Umbrella Palm thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires moist soil or shallow water to grow. It is ideal for planting along pond margins, in bog gardens, or even in containers partially submerged in water. It prefers rich, loamy soil but adapts to a variety of substrates, as long as consistent moisture is maintained. Hardy in mild climates, it may need protection in colder regions of the UK but can be grown as a houseplant or in conservatories where winters are severe.
Propagation is typically achieved through division in spring or summer or by planting offsets. The plant is fast-growing and relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal care apart from ensuring it has adequate water. In colder climates, it may be necessary to overwinter the plant indoors or in frost-free conditions.
In addition to its ornamental value, Cyperus alternifolius fuscus is excellent for filtering and oxygenating water in ponds, making it a functional choice for water quality improvement. Its dense growth also provides habitat and shelter for small aquatic wildlife, contributing to the ecological balance of water features.
With its bold form, dark foliage, and adaptability to wet conditions, Cyperus alternifolius fuscus is a versatile and eye-catching choice for adding height, texture, and elegance to aquatic or moisture-loving planting schemes.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
