Key Points
Cyperus alternifolius 'Invoc', commonly known as the Umbrella Palm, is an elegant and adaptable aquatic perennial that is highly valued for its striking foliage and versatility in wet garden settings. Native to Madagascar, this cultivar of the popular Cyperus alternifolius is perfect for water gardens, pond margins, and containers, adding a tropical aesthetic with its unique umbrella-like leaf arrangement.
Description
Cyperus alternifolius 'Invoc' grows to a height of 90–120 cm (3–4 feet), forming clumps of slender, green stems topped with radiating whorls of narrow, grass-like leaves. This distinctive foliage creates the appearance of an umbrella, giving the plant its common name.
During summer (June to August), the plant produces small, inconspicuous brownish-green flowers at the center of the leaf whorls, adding subtle interest. While the flowers are understated, the plant's architectural foliage is its primary ornamental feature.
Growing Conditions
Cyperus alternifolius 'Invoc' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is well-suited for planting in shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep, making it ideal for pond margins, streams, and bog gardens. The plant performs well in nutrient-rich loam or clay soils and tolerates a wide range of pH conditions, from slightly acidic to neutral.
Hardy in milder regions of the UK, Umbrella Palm may require protection in colder climates. It can also be grown as an indoor or container plant, making it versatile for various environments.
Propagation and Care
Cyperus alternifolius 'Invoc' can be propagated by division or by rooting stem cuttings. Division is best done in spring or early summer by separating clumps and replanting them in moist conditions. Alternatively, the plant can be propagated by submerging cut stems with their leaf whorls in water, where roots will form at the base.
This plant is low-maintenance once established. Regular watering is essential to maintain its preferred wet conditions. In colder regions, container-grown plants can be moved indoors or to a sheltered location during winter. Cut back dead or damaged stems in late autumn to prepare the plant for the next growing season.
Uses
Ornamental:
Cyperus alternifolius 'Invoc' is an excellent choice for water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. Its upright growth habit and unique umbrella-like foliage create a bold architectural statement. It pairs beautifully with other moisture-loving plants like Iris laevigata, Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold), and Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed).
Indoor Plant:
This plant thrives indoors in well-lit spaces with consistently moist soil or water, making it a stylish addition to homes and offices.
Container Planting:
Its compact size and adaptability make it ideal for container gardens, where it can be placed near water features or in partially submerged conditions.
Ecological Value
Cyperus alternifolius 'Invoc' supports local biodiversity by providing habitat and cover for small aquatic creatures and insects. Its dense root system helps stabilize soil along water margins, reducing erosion and improving water quality by filtering sediments and absorbing excess nutrients.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: This plant requires consistently moist or waterlogged soil and is not suitable for dry conditions.
- Frost Sensitivity: In colder climates, Umbrella Palm may need to be overwintered indoors or protected with mulch.
- Spread Management: While not invasive, the plant may spread moderately through rhizomes. Regular division helps control its size in smaller spaces.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
