Key Points
Equisetum scirpoides, commonly known as Bushy Horsetail or Dwarf Horsetail, is a compact and delicate perennial plant from the horsetail family (Equisetaceae). This ancient species is prized for its fine, reed-like texture and its suitability for small-scale or contained aquatic and damp garden settings.
This diminutive horsetail typically grows to a height of 15–30 cm (6–12 inches), making it one of the smallest members of its genus. It features slender, hollow, jointed stems that are dark green and marked with small black sheaths at the nodes. The stems have a soft, hair-like quality, giving the plant its characteristic bushy and graceful appearance.
Unlike some larger horsetail species, Equisetum scirpoides grows in a compact, spreading clump, spreading slowly via creeping rhizomes. This growth habit makes it less aggressive than other horsetails, although it can still naturalise effectively in suitable conditions.
Bushy Horsetail thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist to waterlogged soils, including areas with shallow standing water up to 5 cm (2 inches) deep. It is ideal for small water features, pond margins, and bog gardens, as well as for use in containers. Hardy in UK climates, it tolerates frost and cold temperatures, making it well-suited for temperate regions.
Propagation is typically achieved through division of the rhizomes, as its spore production is not commonly used in horticulture. Once established, the plant is very low-maintenance, requiring only occasional thinning to maintain its tidy form.
Ecologically, Equisetum scirpoides provides habitat for small aquatic animals and stabilises soil in damp or marginal environments. Its compact growth habit makes it a versatile plant for ornamental water gardens where a finer texture or smaller scale is desired.
With its elegant, hair-like stems and ability to thrive in wet conditions, Equisetum scirpoides is a charming addition to naturalistic landscapes, small water gardens, or container displays. Its manageable size and slow growth make it particularly suitable for more formal or small-scale aquatic planting schemes, offering a refined alternative to larger, more vigorous horsetail species.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
