Key Points
Glyceria maxima, commonly known as Reed Sweet Grass, is a vigorous, semi-aquatic perennial grass native to Europe and parts of Asia. It thrives in wetland habitats such as riverbanks, ditches, ponds, and marshes, where its lush, spreading growth plays an important role in soil stabilisation and water filtration.
This tall grass typically grows to a height of 1–2 metres (3–6.5 feet), forming dense clumps or colonies through its creeping rhizomes. The leaves are long, arching, and bright green, with a slightly glossy texture. They add a graceful, flowing quality to its overall appearance, particularly when swaying in the breeze.
Flowering occurs from late spring to midsummer. The plant produces large, open panicles of tiny, greenish-yellow flowers on tall stems. These flowers are wind-pollinated and eventually form seeds, which are dispersed naturally or carried by water.
Reed Sweet Grass thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers wet or waterlogged soil, making it an excellent choice for planting along the edges of ponds, lakes, and streams. It tolerates shallow water up to 20 cm (8 inches) deep and can grow in a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy substrates. Hardy in UK conditions, it withstands frost and performs well in temperate climates.
Propagation is achieved by division of rhizomes in spring or autumn, as well as by seed. Its robust rhizomatous growth allows it to spread rapidly, which can be both an asset and a challenge depending on the planting context. In smaller gardens, it may require containment or regular management to prevent it from becoming invasive.
Ecologically, Glyceria maxima is an important plant for wetland habitats. It provides cover and breeding grounds for aquatic wildlife, including birds, insects, and amphibians. Its dense growth helps stabilise soil, reduce erosion, and filter water by trapping sediments and absorbing excess nutrients.
With its tall, flowing form and adaptability to wet conditions, Reed Sweet Grass is a practical and attractive choice for naturalistic water gardens, wetland restoration projects, and erosion control. However, due to its vigorous growth, it is best suited for larger landscapes or managed environments where its spread can be monitored.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
