Key Points
Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' is a beautiful cultivar of the Japanese Iris, known for its delicate, soft blue flowers with a distinctive mottled pattern. This species is typically found in marshes, ponds, and wetland areas, making it an excellent choice for water gardens, pond margins, and damp landscape settings.
Description
Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) and has an elegant, upright growth habit. The plant produces slender, arching leaves that are dark green and lance-shaped, providing a backdrop for the stunning blooms. The flowers are a soft blue with darker veins and a delicate mottled effect, giving them an intricate and textured appearance. Each flower consists of three upright standards and three drooping falls, with the falls often displaying darker blue or purple markings at their base. The blooms appear in late spring to early summer, typically from May to June, providing a refreshing and calming visual display.
Growing Conditions
Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is perfect for planting along the edges of ponds, streams, or in bog gardens, where the soil is kept damp but well-drained. It can tolerate shallow water up to 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) deep, making it a great choice for aquatic environments. This iris is hardy in UK conditions and can withstand frost, although it may die back in the winter and regrow in the spring.
Propagation and Care
Propagation is usually achieved by dividing the rhizomes in late summer or early spring. Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' benefits from being divided every two to three years to maintain healthy growth. Once established, the plant is low-maintenance, requiring only periodic removal of spent flowers and occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding.
Uses
The elegant, mottled flowers of Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' make it an excellent choice for ornamental water gardens, pond edges, and boggy areas. It can be used as a specimen plant, in groupings, or as part of a naturalistic planting scheme in damp areas. Its beautiful flowers are a focal point in wetland settings and will attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, to the garden.
Ecological Value
Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' offers ecological benefits by providing cover and shelter for aquatic wildlife and by stabilising soil along water margins. The plant also contributes to improving water quality by filtering excess nutrients and preventing erosion. Its early blooms help support early-season pollinators and enhance the biodiversity of water features and wetland gardens.
Considerations
While Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' is a low-maintenance plant, it can spread over time, so regular division may be required to keep it within bounds. Additionally, it is important to ensure it is planted in a location where it will receive consistent moisture to thrive.
With its beautiful, mottled blue flowers and adaptability to wet conditions, Iris laevigata 'Mottled Blue' is a perfect addition to water gardens, ponds, and damp areas. Its delicate blooms, ease of care, and ecological value make it a valuable and attractive plant for any aquatic or wetland landscape.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
