Key Points
Iris louisiana ‘All Agaze’, a cultivar of the Louisiana Iris group, is a striking aquatic perennial known for its vibrant flowers and lush foliage. This cultivar, with its showy blooms and adaptability to wet conditions, is perfect for water gardens, pond margins, and damp borders, bringing bold colour and elegance to any landscape.
Description
Iris louisiana ‘All Agaze’ grows to a height of 70–90 cm (28–36 inches) with a spread of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches). The plant forms clumps of upright, sword-like green leaves that remain attractive throughout the growing season.
In late spring to early summer (May to June), tall stems bear large, eye-catching flowers in shades of vibrant violet-blue with striking yellow and white accents at the base of the petals. The flowers are broad and slightly ruffled, creating a dramatic and elegant display.
Growing Conditions
Iris louisiana ‘All Agaze’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It grows well in shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep, making it ideal for pond edges, bog gardens, or other wetland areas. The plant prefers rich, slightly acidic to neutral soils, such as loam or clay.
Hardy in the UK, this iris tolerates frost and regrows vigorously in spring after winter dormancy, making it a reliable choice for temperate gardens.
Propagation and Care
Iris louisiana ‘All Agaze’ is propagated by division or seed. Division is the most effective method and is best performed in early spring or late summer. To propagate, lift the rhizomes carefully, divide them into sections with roots and shoots, and replant them in moist or waterlogged conditions.
Once established, this plant is low-maintenance. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to maintain its preferred damp conditions. Deadheading spent flowers promotes tidiness and may encourage prolonged blooming. Cutting back old foliage in late autumn prepares the plant for winter dormancy and encourages fresh growth in spring.
Uses
Ornamental:
Iris louisiana ‘All Agaze’ is a stunning addition to water gardens, pond margins, and damp borders. Its bold flowers and upright foliage make it an excellent focal point and a great companion for other moisture-loving plants such as Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold), Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed), and Lythrum salicaria (Purple Loosestrife).
Naturalized Planting:
This iris is ideal for naturalizing in wetlands or boggy areas, where it can spread moderately to create a lush and colourful display.
Container Planting:
Its adaptability and vibrant blooms make it a great choice for large containers placed near water features or patios.
Ecological Value
Iris louisiana ‘All Agaze’ provides nectar and pollen for pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable plant for supporting biodiversity. Its dense foliage offers shelter for small aquatic creatures, and its root system helps stabilize soil along water margins, reducing erosion and improving water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: The plant requires consistently moist or waterlogged soil and is not suitable for dry conditions.
- Winter Dormancy: The plant dies back in winter but regrows vigorously in spring.
- Spread Management: While not invasive, it may spread through rhizomes in optimal conditions. Regular division helps control its size and maintain its vigour.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
