Key Points
Iris 'Louisiana Sea Wisp', a cultivar of the Louisiana Iris group, is a stunning aquatic perennial known for its graceful form and pastel-coloured blooms. This variety is a standout choice for water gardens, pond margins, and boggy landscapes, bringing a serene and elegant aesthetic to wet environments. Its adaptability to moist conditions and its striking flowers make it a favourite among gardeners.
Description
Iris 'Louisiana Sea Wisp' grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) with a spread of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches). The plant forms clumps of upright, sword-like green leaves that provide an attractive, vertical accent throughout the growing season.
In late spring to early summer (May to June), tall flower stems rise above the foliage, bearing large, delicate flowers in soft, pastel shades of lavender, blue, or lilac, often with pale yellow or white markings at the base of the petals. The slightly ruffled blooms have a graceful, airy appearance, adding a touch of elegance to aquatic landscapes.
Growing Conditions
Iris 'Louisiana Sea Wisp' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is ideal for planting in shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep, making it perfect for pond edges, bog gardens, or other wetland areas. The plant grows best in rich, slightly acidic to neutral soils, such as loam or clay.
Hardy in the UK, this cultivar tolerates frost and regrows each spring after winter dormancy, making it a reliable and low-maintenance addition to temperate gardens.
Propagation and Care
Iris 'Louisiana Sea Wisp' can be propagated by division or seed. Division is the most effective method and is best performed in early spring or late summer. To propagate, carefully lift the rhizomes, divide them into sections with roots and shoots, and replant them in suitable moist conditions.
Once established, this plant requires minimal care. Regular watering is essential to maintain the damp conditions it prefers. Deadheading spent flowers keeps the plant tidy and may encourage prolonged blooming. Cutting back old foliage in late autumn prepares the plant for winter dormancy and encourages fresh growth in spring.
Uses
Ornamental:

Its soft pastel flowers bring a sense of tranquillity and pair well with other moisture-loving plants, such as Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed), Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold), and Lysimachia nummularia (Creeping Jenny).
Naturalized Planting:
This iris is suitable for naturalizing in wetlands or boggy areas, where it can spread moderately to create a lush and colourful display.
Container Planting:

Considerations
- Moisture Needs: This plant requires consistently moist or waterlogged soil and is not suitable for dry conditions.
- Winter Dormancy: The plant dies back in winter but regrows vigorously in spring.
- Spread Management: While not invasive, it may spread through rhizomes in optimal conditions. Regular division helps control its size and maintain its vigour.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
