Key Points
Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii is a rare and distinctive form of the Yellow Flag Iris, known for its unique flower structure and slightly different growing habits compared to the typical Iris pseudacorus. This variety retains the bold appearance of the Yellow Flag Iris but with notable variations in its flower characteristics and overall look, making it an intriguing addition to water gardens, pond edges, and wetland landscapes.
Description
Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii grows to a height of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches), with long, sword-like, deep green leaves that form an upright, fan-shaped clump. The plant’s tall stature and broad foliage provide excellent vertical interest in gardens.
The flowers of Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii are similar to those of the typical Yellow Flag Iris, featuring large, vibrant yellow blooms. However, they tend to be slightly more compact, with a slightly more refined and structured appearance compared to the standard Iris pseudacorus. The flowers consist of three upright standards and three drooping falls, with the falls often showing subtle veins or markings that differentiate them from the regular form. The colour of the flowers is a bright, pure yellow, making them stand out against the green foliage. The blooms appear in late spring to early summer, typically from May to June, and are attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Growing Conditions
Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is well-suited for planting along pond edges, in bog gardens, or in shallow water up to 30 cm (12 inches) deep. The plant can tolerate waterlogged conditions, making it perfect for wetland and aquatic environments. Hardy in UK conditions, Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii is frost-resistant and can survive the winter, emerging again in spring.
Propagation and Care
Propagation is typically done by dividing rhizomes in late summer or early spring. Division every two to three years is recommended to maintain healthy growth and ensure strong blooming. Once established, the plant requires minimal maintenance but can benefit from occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage more blooms and keep the plant looking tidy. Regular division is especially important to manage its spread in confined spaces.
Uses
Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii is an excellent addition to ornamental water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. It works well as a specimen plant or in groups, where its bright yellow flowers can create a striking focal point. The compact flowers add an elegant touch to aquatic landscapes. This iris also attracts pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, making it beneficial for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Ecological Value
Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii provides valuable ecological benefits by stabilising soil along water margins and reducing erosion. Its dense foliage provides habitat and shelter for small creatures in aquatic environments. The plant’s nectar-rich flowers support early-season pollinators, contributing to the overall health and biodiversity of garden ecosystems.
Considerations
While Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii is a lovely and hardy plant, it can spread rapidly through its rhizomes, similar to the standard Yellow Flag Iris. It is important to monitor its growth and divide the rhizomes regularly to prevent it from becoming invasive, particularly in smaller garden spaces. As with the typical Iris pseudacorus, this plant should be planted in areas where it has space to grow but will not overrun other plants.
With its bright yellow flowers, bold stature, and ability to thrive in wetland conditions, Iris pseudacorus var. bastardii is an excellent addition to any water garden or wetland landscape. Its striking blooms and ability to attract pollinators make it both a visually appealing and ecologically beneficial choice for gardens with moist or aquatic settings.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
