Key Points
Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger', commonly known as Yellow Flag Iris 'Berlin Tiger', is a striking cultivar of the European yellow iris, prized for its bold, variegated foliage and bright yellow flowers. This variety is a beautiful and unique addition to water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens, offering both visual appeal and versatility in damp or aquatic settings.
Description
Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger' typically grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches), with an upright, fan-shaped growth habit. The plant features long, narrow, sword-like leaves that are green with yellow and white stripes, creating a striking, tiger-stripe appearance. This variegated foliage provides year-round interest, even when the plant is not in bloom, making it a standout in any garden setting.
The flowers of 'Berlin Tiger' are large, bright yellow, and typical of the species, with three upright standards and three drooping falls. The falls have a slight ruffled edge, giving them a delicate appearance, while the entire bloom exudes a cheerful and bold presence in the garden. 'Berlin Tiger' flowers appear in late spring to early summer, typically from May to June. These flowers are also attractive to pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.
Growing Conditions
Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, consistently wet soil. It is perfect for planting along pond edges, in bog gardens, or in shallow water up to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) deep. It can tolerate waterlogged soil or shallow water, making it ideal for aquatic environments. Hardy in UK conditions, this cultivar is frost-resistant and can survive winter, emerging in the spring to produce vibrant flowers and foliage.
Propagation and Care
Propagation of Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger' is typically done by dividing the rhizomes in late summer or early spring. The plant benefits from being divided every two to three years to maintain healthy growth and promote continued blooming. Once established, 'Berlin Tiger' is relatively low-maintenance but may require occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding and maintain a tidy appearance. Deadheading spent flowers will also encourage new blooms and help extend the flowering period.
Uses
Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger' is an excellent addition to ornamental water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. It can be used as a specimen plant, in groupings, or as part of a mixed planting scheme in moist or wet environments. The unique variegated foliage provides contrast and texture, while the bright yellow flowers create a bold, cheerful display. This iris variety can also attract pollinators, enhancing the overall biodiversity of the garden.
Ecological Value
Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger' helps stabilise soil along water margins, preventing erosion and providing shelter for small creatures in wetland environments. The nectar-rich flowers support pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, promoting biodiversity in the garden. The plant’s ability to thrive in moist, wet conditions also makes it valuable for wetland restoration projects or water feature designs.
Considerations
While Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger' is an ornamental and hardy plant, it can spread quickly and may become invasive in certain conditions. It is important to manage its growth by dividing the rhizomes regularly and keeping it in controlled areas, especially in smaller gardens. Additionally, it is best to check local guidelines, as Iris pseudacorus species are considered invasive in some areas outside of their native range.
With its vibrant flowers, striking variegated foliage, and adaptability to wet environments, Iris pseudacorus 'Berlin Tiger' is an outstanding choice for water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. Its bold appearance and ecological benefits make it a valuable addition to any aquatic or damp landscape.

At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
