Key Points
Iris pseudacorus, commonly known as Yellow Flag Iris or Yellow Iris, is a striking and hardy perennial that is native to Europe and parts of Asia. It is known for its vibrant yellow flowers and its ability to thrive in wetland environments, making it a popular choice for water gardens, pond edges, and boggy landscapes.
Description
Iris pseudacorus typically grows to a height of 90–120 cm (36–48 inches), with an upright, fan-shaped growth habit. The plant features long, sword-like leaves that are deep green and provide a lush backdrop for the large, bright yellow flowers. The flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, typically from May to June, and are large, striking, and composed of three upright standards and three drooping falls. The falls often have a slight ruffle at the edges, which gives the flowers a delicate yet bold appearance. The vivid yellow petals create a dramatic contrast against the green leaves and can be a beautiful focal point in aquatic or damp garden settings.
Growing Conditions
Iris pseudacorus thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is perfect for planting along the edges of ponds, streams, or in bog gardens where the soil remains damp but well-drained. The plant can tolerate shallow water up to 30 cm (12 inches) deep, making it well-suited for aquatic environments. Hardy in UK conditions, Yellow Flag Iris is frost-resistant and can survive the winter, reemerging in the spring with vibrant foliage and flowers.
Propagation and Care
Propagation of Iris pseudacorus is typically done by dividing the rhizomes in late summer or early spring. The plant benefits from being divided every two to three years to maintain strong growth and continuous blooming. Once established, it is relatively low-maintenance but may require occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding. Deadheading spent flowers can also encourage more blooms and help maintain a tidy appearance. Regular division is particularly important for controlling the spread of this plant in smaller spaces.
Uses
Iris pseudacorus is an excellent choice for ornamental water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. It can be planted as a specimen plant, in groups, or as part of a mixed planting scheme in moist environments. Its large, vibrant yellow flowers add bold colour to aquatic landscapes, and its tall, arching leaves provide texture and structure. Yellow Flag Iris also attracts pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, adding to its value in wildlife-friendly gardens.
Ecological Value
Iris pseudacorus plays a vital role in wetland ecosystems. It helps stabilise soil along water margins, preventing erosion, and provides habitat for small aquatic creatures. The plant’s nectar-rich flowers support pollinators, contributing to overall biodiversity. Additionally, its ability to thrive in wet conditions makes it valuable for wetland restoration projects and water features, as it helps filter water and maintain healthy aquatic environments.
Considerations
While Iris pseudacorus is a beautiful and hardy plant, it can spread rapidly through its rhizomes and become invasive in some areas. It is important to manage its growth, especially in smaller garden spaces or in areas where it could potentially spread uncontrollably. In some regions, Yellow Flag Iris is considered invasive, so it is essential to check local regulations before planting.
With its vibrant yellow flowers, ease of care, and ecological benefits, Iris pseudacorus is an excellent addition to any water garden, pond, or bog garden. Its striking blooms, pollinator-friendly qualities, and ability to thrive in wet conditions make it a valuable and beautiful choice for enhancing aquatic landscapes.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
