Key Points
Iris versicolor 'Dark Aura', a cultivar of the native Iris versicolor (Blue Flag Iris), is a stunning aquatic perennial valued for its deep, dramatic blooms and upright, sword-like foliage. This variety thrives in wetland environments, making it an excellent choice for water gardens, pond margins, and damp borders. Its rich, dark-hued flowers bring sophistication and contrast to moist garden settings.
Description
Iris versicolor 'Dark Aura' grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) with a spread of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches). The plant forms clumps of narrow, upright, bright green leaves that provide structure and texture even when not in bloom.
From late spring to early summer (May to June), it produces stunning, deep purple to dark violet flowers. The blooms feature a velvety texture with intricate veining and a touch of yellow or white on the falls, creating a striking contrast. The elegant, darker coloration of 'Dark Aura' makes it a standout feature in aquatic landscapes.
Growing Conditions
Iris versicolor 'Dark Aura' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is ideal for planting along pond edges, streams, or in bog gardens. The plant grows well in shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep and adapts to a variety of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, provided they remain moist. Slightly acidic to neutral soils are preferred.
Hardy in the UK, this cultivar can tolerate frost and will regrow each spring after winter dormancy.
Propagation and Care
Iris versicolor 'Dark Aura' can be propagated by division or seed. Division is the most reliable method and is best performed in early spring or autumn. Lift the rhizomes, separate them into sections with roots and shoots, and replant them in suitable moist conditions.
Once established, the plant is low-maintenance. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil damp, especially during dry periods. Deadheading spent flowers will promote tidiness and may extend the blooming period. In autumn, cutting back the foliage prepares the plant for winter and encourages fresh growth in spring.
Uses
Ornamental:
Iris versicolor 'Dark Aura' is an excellent choice for water gardens, pond edges, and damp borders. Its rich, dark flowers provide dramatic contrast and pair well with lighter-coloured or complementary plants like Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold) and Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed).
Naturalized Planting:
This cultivar is suitable for naturalizing in wetland areas, where it can spread moderately to create a stunning display of foliage and blooms.
Containers:
Dark Aura can also be grown in containers placed at pond edges or water features, making it versatile for smaller spaces.
Ecological Value
Iris versicolor 'Dark Aura' is a valuable plant for supporting pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Its dense foliage provides shelter for small aquatic creatures, and its roots help stabilize soil along water margins, reducing erosion and improving the health of wetland ecosystems.
Considerations
- Moisture Requirements: The plant requires consistently moist or waterlogged soil and is not suitable for dry areas.
- Winter Dormancy: The plant dies back in winter but regrows vigorously in spring.
- Spread Management: While not invasive, it may spread in optimal conditions. Regular division helps maintain its size and vigour.
Summary

Its ornamental value, ease of care, and ecological benefits make it a standout choice for enhancing moist garden settings with bold colour and texture. Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
