Key Points
Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' is a beautiful cultivar of Iris versicolor, also known as Blue Flag or Poison Flag. This variety is particularly prized for its rich, vibrant red-purple flowers that make it a standout in water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' offers the same hardy characteristics as the species, thriving in moist environments and providing stunning colour to aquatic landscapes.
Description
Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) with an upright, fan-shaped growth habit. The plant features long, narrow, sword-like green leaves, which provide an attractive base for the plant’s showy flowers.
The flowers of 'Kermesina' are deep, rich shades of red-purple, offering a dramatic contrast to the typical blue or purple flowers of Iris versicolor. The blooms consist of three upright standards and three drooping falls, with the falls displaying a darker, richer shade of red-purple. The flowers also feature subtle veining and yellow or white markings near the base, which adds dimension and interest to their already vibrant appearance. The flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, typically from May to June, and are fragrant, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Growing Conditions
Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soils. It is perfect for planting along pond edges, in bog gardens, or in shallow water up to 30 cm (12 inches) deep. This cultivar is well-suited for wetland environments and can tolerate standing water for extended periods. Hardy in UK conditions, Iris versicolor varieties like 'Kermesina' are frost-resistant and can survive the winter, regrowing in the spring.
Propagation and Care
Propagation of Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' is typically done by dividing rhizomes in late summer or early spring. The plant benefits from being divided every two to three years to ensure healthy growth and continued flowering. Once established, it is low-maintenance but may require occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage new blooms and help maintain a tidy appearance. Regular division helps control its spread and keeps the plant in check, especially in smaller garden spaces.
Uses
Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' is an excellent addition to ornamental water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. It can be planted as a specimen plant, in groups, or as part of a mixed planting scheme in wet or damp environments. The striking red-purple flowers create a bold focal point in any aquatic landscape, and they attract pollinators, adding to the overall ecological value of the garden.
Ecological Value
Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' offers numerous ecological benefits. It helps stabilise soil along water margins, preventing erosion, and provides shelter for small creatures in aquatic environments. Its nectar-rich flowers attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, contributing to the health and biodiversity of the garden. Additionally, the plant’s ability to thrive in wet conditions makes it valuable for wetland restoration projects and water feature designs.
Considerations
While Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' is an elegant and hardy plant, it can spread through its rhizomes, similar to other varieties of Iris versicolor. Regular division is necessary to maintain its size and prevent overcrowding, especially in smaller garden spaces. It thrives in consistently moist or wet conditions, so it should be planted in areas where moisture is reliably available.
With its rich, vibrant red-purple blooms, Iris versicolor 'Kermesina' is a stunning addition to any water garden or wetland landscape. Its bold flowers, combined with its low-maintenance care and ecological benefits, make it an excellent choice for creating a striking and functional feature in aquatic or damp areas.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
