Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower)
Lobelia cardinalis, commonly known as Cardinal Flower, is a striking perennial native to North America, renowned for its vibrant red blooms and upright growth habit. This moisture-loving plant thrives in wet or damp environments, making it ideal for water gardens, pond edges, and boggy areas, where it provides a bold splash of color and supports pollinators.
Description
- Height: 60–120 cm (24–48 inches)
- Spread: 30–45 cm (12–18 inches)
- Flowers: The brilliant, scarlet-red tubular flowers are arranged on tall, upright spikes and bloom from mid to late summer (July to September). The vivid color is highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
- Foliage: The lance-shaped, dark green leaves form a basal rosette and remain attractive throughout the growing season.
- Growth Habit: Erect and clump-forming, this perennial creates a dramatic vertical accent in garden beds or along water features.
Growing Conditions
Lobelia cardinalis thrives in consistently moist to wet environments and prefers sunny to partially shaded locations.
- Soil: Prefers rich, moist, or wet soil with good drainage. It performs well in loamy or clay soils and tolerates standing water, making it perfect for pond edges or rain gardens.
- Water: Requires consistently moist soil, especially during the growing season. It can tolerate shallow standing water for short periods.
- Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, partial shade is recommended to protect the plant from excessive heat.
This plant is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well with proper winter care.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Divide clumps every 2–3 years in early spring to maintain vigor and encourage healthy growth. Replant divisions in moist soil.
- Seed: Sow seeds in early spring in a moist, well-drained medium. Seeds require light to germinate, so do not cover them deeply.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
- Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
- Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
- In colder climates, protect the root crown with a layer of mulch to prevent winter damage.
Uses
- Water Gardens: Thrives along pond edges, streams, or in boggy areas, adding vibrant color to moisture-rich environments.
- Borders: Ideal for damp borders or rain gardens, where its tall flower spikes create a striking focal point.
- Naturalized Planting: Perfect for naturalizing in wet meadows or woodland edges, supporting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity.
- Containers: Can be grown in large containers with consistently moist soil, making it suitable for patios or balconies.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
- Wildlife Habitat: Provides cover for insects and small animals in damp or wetland areas.
- Erosion Control: The dense root system helps stabilize soil in wet areas, reducing erosion along water margins.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil and will struggle in dry or sandy conditions.
- Cold Hardiness: While hardy, the root crown can benefit from a protective mulch layer in colder climates.
- Toxicity: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so care should be taken to keep it away from pets and children.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
