Key Points
Persicaria amphibia, commonly known as Amphibious Bistort, is a versatile perennial aquatic plant native to Europe and Asia. This plant is known for its ability to grow both in water and on land, making it ideal for water gardens, ponds, and damp landscapes. It thrives in wet, marshy conditions, providing texture, colour, and habitat for wildlife.
Description
Persicaria amphibia typically grows to a height of 30–90 cm (12–36 inches) with an upright, clumping growth habit. The plant features narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green with a slightly reddish or purple hue along the stem. The leaves are glossy and arranged alternately along the stems, giving the plant a full and bushy appearance.
From mid to late summer (usually July to August), Amphibious Bistort produces dense, cylindrical clusters of small, white to pale pink flowers. These flower spikes are about 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) long and add vertical interest to the plant. The flowers are subtly attractive and grow in clusters at the top of the plant’s stems, often attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. The plant is also known for its ability to thrive both submerged in water and in damp, marshy soil, which is where it gets the name "amphibious."
Growing Conditions
Persicaria amphibia thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It can grow in shallow water up to 30 cm (12 inches) deep, making it ideal for planting along the edges of ponds, in water gardens, or in marshy areas. It can also grow in damp soil outside of the water, making it a flexible plant for various wetland environments.
This plant is hardy in the UK, tolerating frost and regrowing in the spring. It is well-suited for planting in areas where water levels may fluctuate, such as the edges of ponds, where it can thrive both submerged and when the water level recedes.
Propagation and Care
Propagation of Persicaria amphibia is typically done by division or from seed. The plant spreads through its rhizomes, and it can be divided in spring or autumn to encourage healthy growth and maintain its size. Seeds can be sown in early spring for new plants, although division is often the faster method for establishing new growth.
Once established, Amphibious Bistort is relatively low-maintenance. However, it may require occasional thinning to prevent overcrowding, especially in smaller garden spaces. Regular division helps control its spread and maintain a more compact growth habit. Deadheading the flowers can also help prolong blooming and keep the plant looking tidy.
Uses
Persicaria amphibia is an excellent choice for water gardens, bog gardens, and naturalistic plantings. It adds texture with its dense foliage and flowering spikes, providing visual interest and contributing to the overall ecosystem. It works well along the edges of ponds or streams, where it can grow submerged or in damp soil, creating a natural look. The plant can also be used in rain gardens or wetland restoration projects, where it helps improve water quality and prevent erosion.
Ecological Value
Amphibious Bistort is ecologically valuable in several ways. It provides habitat and shelter for small wildlife, such as insects, amphibians, and birds. Its flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, which help support biodiversity. The dense foliage helps stabilise soil along water margins, reducing erosion and improving the structure of wetland ecosystems. Additionally, its ability to grow in both water and damp soil helps improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and preventing the overgrowth of algae.
Considerations
While Persicaria amphibia is a hardy and attractive plant, it can spread rapidly through its rhizomes, so it should be managed carefully in smaller garden spaces. It is best planted in an area with enough space to accommodate its spreading habit or in a container or controlled environment to prevent it from becoming invasive. Regular division will help keep the plant's growth in check and encourage healthy, compact growth.
With its ability to grow in both water and damp soil, along with its attractive foliage and flowers, Persicaria amphibia is a great addition to any water garden, pond, or wetland landscape. Its adaptability, low-maintenance nature, and ecological benefits make it a valuable plant for improving the health and beauty of aquatic environments.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
