Key Points
Potentilla palustris, commonly known as Marsh Cinquefoil, is a perennial herb native to wetland areas in North America and parts of Europe. This plant is valued for its attractive flowers, which are typically yellow, and its ability to thrive in marshy, moist environments. It is an excellent choice for water gardens, bog gardens, and wetland landscaping, where it can tolerate wet conditions and provide both ornamental and ecological benefits.
Description
Potentilla palustris typically grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) and has a bushy, clump-forming habit. The leaves of the plant are deeply lobed, palmate in shape, and typically green on the upper side with a slightly hairy texture on the underside. These leaves provide a soft, textured appearance that complements the plant's delicate flowers.
In late spring to early summer (typically from May to June), Marsh Cinquefoil produces bright yellow, five-petaled flowers. The flowers are about 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 inches) across and have a star-like appearance. The blooms are borne in loose clusters at the ends of the stems, and their cheerful yellow colour adds vibrancy to wetland and bog gardens. The plant’s flowers attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other insects, making it beneficial for supporting local wildlife.
Growing Conditions
Potentilla palustris thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist to wet soil. It is often found in marshy areas, along pond edges, or in damp meadows. The plant can tolerate shallow water up to 15 cm (6 inches) deep, making it well-suited for planting around ponds, streams, or in bog gardens. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and can tolerate slightly acidic to neutral pH levels.
Hardy in the UK, Marsh Cinquefoil can survive cold temperatures and frost, reemerging in spring after winter dormancy. The plant performs best in areas with consistently available moisture, though it can tolerate short periods of drought once established.
Propagation and Care
Potentilla palustris can be propagated by division or from seed. The plant can be divided in early spring or autumn to maintain healthy growth and to create new plants. Seeds can be sown in early spring, and the plant is generally easy to grow from seed if given the proper moisture and warmth for germination.
Once established, Marsh Cinquefoil is relatively low-maintenance. It may benefit from occasional thinning or trimming to prevent overcrowding, particularly in smaller garden spaces. Deadheading spent flowers can help maintain a tidy appearance and may encourage additional blooms. It is also helpful to divide the plant every few years to keep it from becoming overcrowded in wet garden areas.
Uses
Potentilla palustris is commonly used in water gardens, bog gardens, and marshy landscapes. Its bright yellow flowers create a striking display in damp environments, while its attractive foliage provides texture and ground cover. It can be planted along the edges of ponds or streams, where its dense growth helps stabilise the soil and prevent erosion.
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in wetland or bog gardens and can be used in rain gardens to help manage excess moisture. Its ability to thrive in shallow water and damp soil makes it perfect for pond margins or areas prone to occasional flooding.
Ecological Value
Marsh Cinquefoil offers several ecological benefits. Its dense foliage helps stabilise soil, reducing erosion along water margins and improving soil structure in wetland areas. The plant’s nectar-rich flowers support a variety of pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, contributing to the overall biodiversity of the garden. Additionally, Potentilla palustris helps filter excess nutrients and improve water quality in wetland environments, reducing the risk of algae overgrowth and promoting healthy aquatic ecosystems.
Considerations
While Potentilla palustris is generally low-maintenance, it does require consistently moist conditions to thrive. It is not drought-tolerant, so it should be planted in areas where moisture is reliably available. While it is not typically invasive, the plant can spread through rhizomes and self-seeding, so it may need to be managed in smaller garden spaces. Regular division and monitoring of its growth are recommended to keep the plant in check.
With its attractive yellow flowers, dense growth habit, and ability to thrive in wetland environments, Potentilla palustris is an excellent choice for water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. Its ecological value and role in supporting pollinators make it a valuable addition to any damp or aquatic landscape.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
