Key Points
Ranunculus acris, commonly known as Bachelor’s Buttons, Tall Buttercup, or Meadow Buttercup, is a herbaceous perennial plant native to Europe and Asia. It is prized for its cheerful yellow flowers and graceful, upright growth, making it a charming addition to wildflower meadows, naturalized landscapes, and damp garden borders. This classic wildflower thrives in moist to moderately wet conditions and is an excellent choice for enhancing biodiversity in garden settings.
Description
Ranunculus acris grows to a height of 45–90 cm (18–36 inches), forming a clump of finely divided, bright green, palmate leaves. The foliage grows primarily at the base of the plant, while slender, branching stems rise above to support its flowers.
From late spring to midsummer (May to July), Bachelor’s Buttons produces a profusion of small, bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers about 2–3 cm (1 inch) in diameter. The glossy petals surround a central cluster of yellow stamens, creating a vibrant and sunny appearance. The flowers are borne on wiry stems that sway gracefully in the breeze, adding a light, airy quality to garden borders or wildflower areas.
Growing Conditions
Ranunculus acris thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is well-suited for damp meadows, pond edges, or moist borders. The plant grows well in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they retain adequate moisture. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH conditions.
This buttercup is fully hardy in the UK and can tolerate frost, regrowing vigorously each spring after winter dormancy. While it prefers moist conditions, it can adapt to drier soils if watered regularly.
Propagation and Care
Ranunculus acris can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds can be sown in autumn or spring, directly into moist soil or in seed trays, and will germinate readily under the right conditions. Division of established clumps is best done in early spring or autumn.
Once established, Bachelor’s Buttons is a low-maintenance plant. Regular watering during dry periods helps maintain its lush appearance and ensures prolonged flowering. Deadheading spent blooms can extend the flowering season, though allowing some flowers to go to seed supports natural propagation and wildlife. Cutting back the foliage in late autumn will tidy the plant and prepare it for winter.
Uses
Ornamental:
Ranunculus acris is a delightful addition to wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, and damp garden borders. Its sunny yellow flowers bring warmth and natural charm to any landscape. It pairs beautifully with other wildflowers, such as Lychnis flos-cuculi (Ragged Robin), Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold), and Filipendula ulmaria (Meadowsweet).
Naturalized Planting:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in damp or meadow-like settings, where it can spread moderately to create a vibrant, wild display.
Ecological Value
Ranunculus acris is a valuable plant for supporting biodiversity. Its flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its seeds provide food for birds and small mammals. Additionally, its foliage offers shelter for insects, contributing to the health of garden ecosystems.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: While tolerant of a range of conditions, this plant performs best in moist or damp soils. Prolonged drought may inhibit flowering and reduce vigour.
- Toxicity: Like many members of the buttercup family, Ranunculus acris contains compounds that can irritate the skin or cause mild toxicity if ingested. It should be planted with care in areas accessible to pets or children.
- Spread Management: Although not invasive, it can spread in favourable conditions through self-seeding. Regular deadheading or thinning may be necessary in controlled garden spaces.
Summary
With its bright yellow flowers, airy growth habit, and adaptability to damp conditions, Ranunculus acris is a charming and versatile addition to wildflower meadows, naturalized areas, and moist garden borders. Its cheerful blooms and ecological benefits make it a valuable plant for enhancing the beauty and biodiversity of any outdoor space. Whether used as part of a meadow planting or as a feature in a damp border, Bachelor’s Buttons adds a timeless and natural charm to the garden.

At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
