Rumex sanguineus, known as red-veined dock or bloody dock, forms a rosette of oblong green leaves with striking dark red to purple veins. The red-veined form is mostly seen in gardens; the wild native plant usually has green veins.

Is red-veined dock a pond plant?
No. It is a moist border plant, not a water plant. Grow it in moist but not waterlogged soil around the pond or at the edge of a bog garden, never under water.
How to plant and care for it
Plant in spring. Cut off the flower stems after flowering to stop it self-seeding. Watch for slugs and aphids.
Is it poisonous?
It is harmful if eaten in large amounts, including by pets, because it contains oxalates. Wear gloves when handling it.
Which size should I buy?
Bare-root plants (7 cm, 9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre) arrive without a pot or compost and are the most economical way to plant a group. Potted plants (9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre) arrive growing in our peat-free compost and give a faster display. Packs of 3 come in 7 cm, 9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre bare-root sizes and cost less per plant. The 2x Pot & Compost option is two plants supplied with pots and compost.
