Key Points
Sagittaria sagittifolia ‘Flore Plena’, commonly known as Double-Flowered Arrowhead, is a beautiful aquatic perennial that adds elegance to water gardens, ponds, and wetlands. A cultivar of the native Sagittaria sagittifolia, this plant is distinguished by its charming, double white flowers and striking arrow-shaped foliage. It thrives in shallow water, making it a great choice for pond margins and boggy areas.
Description
Sagittaria sagittifolia ‘Flore Plena’ grows to a height of 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) and features glossy, dark green, arrowhead-shaped leaves that emerge from the water on long petioles. The foliage provides a lush, tropical feel to aquatic settings and forms a striking backdrop for the flowers.
In summer (June to August), this cultivar produces clusters of delicate, double white flowers with a yellow center. The flowers are borne on slender, upright stems that rise above the foliage, creating a light and airy appearance. The blooms are longer-lasting and more ornamental than those of the single-flowered species, making this cultivar particularly appealing for decorative water gardens.
Growing Conditions
Sagittaria sagittifolia ‘Flore Plena’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is ideal for planting in shallow water up to 30 cm (12 inches) deep, making it well-suited for pond margins, streams, and bog gardens. The plant prefers nutrient-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soil but can adapt to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils.
Hardy in the UK, this plant can tolerate frost and regrows in spring after dying back in winter. Its adaptability and robust nature make it a reliable choice for aquatic gardens.
Propagation and Care
Sagittaria sagittifolia ‘Flore Plena’ is propagated by division or offsets. Division is best done in spring or autumn by separating clumps of the rhizomes and replanting them in suitable conditions. Offsets that form naturally around the base of the plant can also be detached and planted.
Once established, this plant requires minimal maintenance. Regular watering is essential to maintain the damp conditions it prefers. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage prolonged blooming and keep the plant looking tidy. In smaller water gardens, occasional thinning may be necessary to prevent overcrowding.
Uses
Ornamental:
This cultivar is an excellent choice for water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens, where its double white flowers and arrow-shaped leaves create a sophisticated and naturalistic look. It pairs well with other moisture-loving plants, such as Iris laevigata (Water Iris), Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold), and Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed).
Naturalized Plantings:
Double-Flowered Arrowhead is also suitable for naturalizing in wetland areas, where it provides structure and biodiversity to the landscape.
Ecological Value
Sagittaria sagittifolia ‘Flore Plena’ supports pollinators such as bees and flies, which are attracted to its nectar-rich flowers. Its foliage offers shelter for small aquatic creatures, including amphibians and insects, contributing to the overall health of wetland ecosystems.
Additionally, the plant helps stabilize soil along water margins, reducing erosion and improving water quality by filtering sediments and absorbing excess nutrients.
Considerations
- Moisture Requirements: The plant requires consistently moist or waterlogged soil and is not suitable for dry areas.
- Winter Dormancy: Sagittaria sagittifolia ‘Flore Plena’ dies back in winter but regrows vigorously in spring.
- Space Management: While not overly aggressive, it may spread in optimal conditions. Regular division helps control its size in smaller water gardens.

With its elegant double white flowers, lush arrow-shaped foliage, and ability to thrive in wet conditions, Sagittaria sagittifolia ‘Flore Plena’ is a stunning addition to water gardens, pond margins, and bog landscapes. Its ornamental value, ecological benefits, and ease of care make it a versatile and attractive choice for enhancing aquatic settings. Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
