Key Points
Saururus chinensis, commonly known as Chinese Lizard's Tail, is a unique aquatic perennial native to East Asia. Known for its elegant white flower spikes and attractive heart-shaped foliage, this plant thrives in wetland conditions, making it an excellent choice for water gardens, pond margins, and boggy landscapes. Its unusual name comes from the curved, tail-like appearance of its flower spikes.
Description
Saururus chinensis grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) with a spread of up to 60 cm (24 inches). The plant features dense, clumping growth with bright green, heart-shaped leaves that are slightly aromatic when crushed.
From late spring to early autumn (May to September), the plant produces graceful, drooping spikes of small white flowers. These flower spikes resemble a lizard’s tail, giving the plant its common name. The flowers are lightly fragrant, adding to the plant's appeal.
Growing Conditions
Saururus chinensis thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil. It is well-suited for planting in shallow water up to 10 cm (4 inches) deep, making it ideal for pond edges, streams, and bog gardens. The plant adapts well to various soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, provided they remain damp. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH levels.
Fully hardy in the UK, Chinese Lizard's Tail tolerates frost and regrows each spring after winter dormancy.
Propagation and Care
Saururus chinensis can be propagated by division or seed. Division is the most reliable method and is best done in early spring or autumn. Separate clumps with roots and replant them in suitable moist conditions. Seeds can also be sown in damp soil in spring but may take longer to establish.
This plant requires minimal maintenance once established. Regular watering is essential to maintain its preferred wet environment. Cutting back old foliage in late autumn prepares the plant for winter dormancy. If allowed to spread, the plant may naturalize in wet areas, but it can be controlled by regular division.
Uses
Ornamental:
Chinese Lizard's Tail is a beautiful addition to water gardens, pond edges, and bog gardens. Its elegant flower spikes and lush foliage bring a naturalistic charm to aquatic landscapes. It pairs well with other moisture-loving plants such as Iris laevigata, Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed), and Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold).
Naturalized Planting:
This plant is ideal for naturalizing in wetlands or along streams, where its spreading habit can enhance the visual and ecological value of the landscape.
Ecological Value
Saururus chinensis supports biodiversity by providing habitat and cover for aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife. Its flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, while its dense foliage offers shelter for small creatures. Additionally, its roots help stabilize soil along water margins, reducing erosion and improving water quality.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: The plant requires consistently moist or waterlogged conditions to thrive. It is not suitable for dry or well-drained soils.
- Spread Management: While not invasive, Chinese Lizard's Tail can spread in optimal conditions. Regular division helps control its growth in smaller gardens.
- Winter Dormancy: The plant dies back in winter but regrows vigorously in spring.
Summary
With its graceful flower spikes, attractive foliage, and adaptability to wet conditions, Saururus chinensis (Chinese Lizard's Tail) is a versatile and elegant addition to water gardens, pond edges, and boggy landscapes. Its ornamental beauty, ecological benefits, and ease of care make it a valuable choice for enhancing aquatic environments. Whether used as a focal point or part of a naturalized planting, Chinese Lizard's Tail adds charm and biodiversity to any garden setting.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
