Key Points
Scirpus lacustris var. ‘Zebrinus’, commonly known as Zebra Rush or Schoenoplectus lacustris ‘Zebrinus’, is a striking ornamental cultivar of the Scirpus lacustris species, known for its unique striped appearance. It is often used in water gardens, ponds, and wetland landscapes for its decorative value and distinctive foliage. Zebra Rush is a versatile plant that thrives in moist environments and adds both texture and structure to garden spaces.
Description
Scirpus lacustris var. ‘Zebrinus’ typically grows to a height of 60–90 cm (24–36 inches), with tall, upright stems that are distinctly striped with alternating green and yellow bands, giving the plant its name. The plant has slender, reed-like stems, and the contrasting striped foliage creates a striking visual effect, adding interest to both aquatic and garden landscapes. The leaves are smooth and narrow, arranged in a tufted or clump-forming manner at the base of the plant.
In late summer to early autumn, Zebra Rush produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are arranged in dense clusters at the tops of the stems. These flowers are usually brown or greenish in colour and are not the primary attraction of the plant. However, the tall, erect growth and striped stems continue to provide visual interest throughout the growing season, even after flowering has finished.
Growing Conditions
Scirpus lacustris var. ‘Zebrinus’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist or waterlogged soil. It is perfect for planting along the edges of ponds, streams, or in wetland gardens, where it can grow in shallow water up to 30 cm (12 inches) deep. The plant performs best in nutrient-rich, slightly acidic to neutral pH soils, and can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, or sandy soils.
Zebra Rush is hardy in the UK and can tolerate frost, regrowing in the spring after winter dormancy. It thrives in areas with consistent moisture and can withstand fluctuating water levels, making it suitable for both water gardens and boggy environments.
Propagation and Care
Scirpus lacustris var. ‘Zebrinus’ can be propagated by division or by seed. Division is typically done in early spring or autumn, and involves separating the plant’s rhizomes into smaller sections that can be replanted in moist soil or shallow water. Propagation by seed is also possible, although it takes longer for the plant to establish itself from seed.
Once established, Zebra Rush is relatively low-maintenance. It requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, to ensure it remains healthy. The plant should be kept in consistently moist or submerged conditions to thrive. If growing in smaller spaces, periodic division may be necessary to manage its spread. Deadheading spent flowers and trimming damaged or yellowing leaves will help maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth.
Uses
Scirpus lacustris var. ‘Zebrinus’ is primarily used for ornamental purposes in water gardens, ponds, and wetland landscapes. Its distinctive striped foliage creates an eye-catching contrast against other aquatic plants, making it a focal point in garden designs. It works well in mixed plantings, where its vertical, upright habit and unique appearance can add texture and structure.
The plant is also useful in stabilizing soil along water margins, reducing erosion, and improving water quality by absorbing excess nutrients. Its dense root system helps promote a healthy aquatic ecosystem by filtering pollutants and reducing algae growth.
Ecological Value
Zebra Rush provides several ecological benefits. Its dense, fibrous root system helps stabilize soil along water margins, reducing erosion and promoting better soil structure in wetland areas. The plant’s flowers attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, supporting local biodiversity.
In addition, Schoenoplectus lacustris ‘Zebrinus’ helps improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and preventing the overgrowth of algae, which can damage aquatic ecosystems. The plant’s tall stems provide shelter for small aquatic creatures, insects, and amphibians, further contributing to the overall biodiversity of a pond or wetland garden.
Considerations
While Scirpus lacustris var. ‘Zebrinus’ is an easy-to-grow plant, it can spread rapidly through rhizomes and may require management in smaller garden spaces. Regular division is recommended to prevent it from becoming too invasive. The plant thrives in wetland or aquatic conditions and requires consistent moisture, so it should not be planted in dry areas.
With its unique striped foliage, upright growth habit, and ecological benefits, Zebra Rush is a valuable addition to water gardens, ponds, and naturalized wetland landscapes. Its ornamental appeal, low-maintenance care, and ability to improve water quality make it a great plant for enhancing the health and beauty of aquatic environments.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
