From midsummer it produces fluffy, silky flower heads that open bright pink and deepen to ruby red, catching the light beautifully before fading to silver. It is excellent at the front of sunny borders, in gravel gardens and in patio containers.

Grow in full sun in light, very well-drained soil; it tolerates poor, dry, sandy ground. It is tender and only survives to about -5C, so in most UK gardens treat it as an annual or grow it in a pot and move it to a frost-free place for winter. Avoid winter wet. Cut back old growth in spring before new shoots appear.
