Scilla bifolia Bulb

Scilla bifolia is a compact, bulbous perennial admired for its vivid early spring display. Producing upright spikes of deep blue, star-shaped flowers, it blooms in March and April, bringing life to shaded borders and woodland areas just as winter recedes. The species name ‘bifolia’ refers to the plant’s two glossy, narrow basal leaves, which contrast attractively with the bright blue petals. Each flower is typically around 1 - 2 cm wide, forming in loose clusters on slender stems. This low-growing bulb thrives in moist but well-drained soil and naturalises well under deciduous trees or in lightly shaded rock gardens. Scilla bifolia can gradually spread by seed and offsets, forming natural drifts when undisturbed. Its early flowering period makes it a useful nectar source for emerging pollinators. Hardy and reliable, this species offers dependable spring colour with minimal maintenance and works beautifully when combined with other woodland bulbs like Anemone nemorosa.
