The plumes rise above clumps of glossy, dark green, deeply divided leaves and fade to russet seed heads that stand into winter. A compact plant, it is ideal for moist borders, shady corners, containers and the edges of ponds.

Grow in partial shade or sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist all year; astilbes suffer and brown in dry soil, particularly in full sun. Water well in dry spells and mulch each spring. Leave the dried flower heads over winter for structure and cut back in early spring. Divide every three or four years to keep plants vigorous. They are fully hardy.
