Key Points
Baldellia ranunculoides (Lesser water plaintain)
Baldellia ranunculoides, commonly known as Lesser Water Plantain, is a small, delicate perennial plant native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of western Asia. It thrives in shallow water habitats and wetland areas, making it a popular choice for naturalistic pond settings and wildlife-friendly landscapes.
This creeping aquatic plant typically grows to a height of 10–30 cm (4–12 inches) and spreads through rhizomatous growth, allowing it to form low mats in suitable conditions. Its leaves are light to medium green, smooth, and shaped narrowly lanceolate to ovate, often forming a basal rosette that can emerge above or float on the water surface.
From late spring to early autumn, Baldellia ranunculoides produces small, delicate flowers on slender, branched stalks. The flowers, measuring approximately 1–1.5 cm (0.4–0.6 inches) in diameter, are pale pink to lilac, occasionally white, and feature three rounded petals. These flowers add a soft charm to wetland areas and attract various pollinators.
Native to freshwater habitats such as ponds, ditches, marshes, and lake margins, Lesser Water Plantain prefers nutrient-poor, muddy, or sandy substrates. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, making it versatile for different aquatic settings. Hardy in UK conditions, the plant can withstand mild frost and is best cultivated in shallow water or consistently moist soil with depths up to 10 cm (4 inches).
In addition to its ornamental appeal, Baldellia ranunculoides plays an important ecological role by providing habitat and food for aquatic invertebrates, as well as offering shelter for small fish and amphibians. The plant propagates easily through division of rhizomes or seeds in spring, ensuring its ease of establishment in suitable environments.
Despite its name, Lesser Water Plantain is not closely related to true plantains (Plantago species). Its flowers resemble those of buttercups (Ranunculus), a similarity reflected in its species name ranunculoides. This distinctive feature enhances its charm as a water garden plant.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
