Key Points
Colocasia 'Pink China' (Elephant Ear)
Colocasia 'Pink China' is one of the hardiest Elephant Ear varieties, prized for its large, tropical foliage and striking pink stems. This moisture-loving perennial thrives in boggy conditions and adds a lush, exotic feel to water gardens, borders, and container plantings. Unlike many Colocasia varieties, 'Pink China' is highly resilient, making it a great choice for temperate gardens, including the UK.
Description
- Height: 90–150 cm (36–60 inches)
 - Spread: 60–120 cm (24–48 inches)
 - Foliage: Large, bright green, heart-shaped leaves with slightly wavy edges grow on striking rosy-pink stems, giving the plant a unique and vibrant contrast. The leaves are slightly glossy and can reach up to 60 cm (24 inches) long.
 - Flowers: Occasional pale yellow spathe-like flowers may appear in warm conditions, but the plant is primarily grown for its dramatic foliage.
 - Growth Habit: Clump-forming and upright, with vigorous growth, especially in warm, humid conditions.

Growing Conditions
Colocasia 'Pink China' thrives in moist, warm conditions and can tolerate colder temperatures better than most Colocasia varieties.
- Soil: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Loamy or clay-based soils with organic matter work best.
 - Water: Requires consistently moist soil and thrives in shallow standing water, making it ideal for pond edges and bog gardens. Avoid dry conditions.
 - Light: Grows best in partial shade to full sun. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch.
 - Hardiness: One of the hardiest Colocasia varieties (down to -10°C / 14°F with mulch), making it suitable for temperate gardens like the UK.

Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing tubers in spring. Replant divisions in moist, well-drained soil.
 -
Overwintering (Cold Climates):
- In mild climates, apply a thick mulch layer over the base to protect tubers from frost.
 - In harsh winters, dig up tubers, dry them slightly, and store them in a cool, dry place for replanting in spring.

 -
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially in dry weather.
 - Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season for lush foliage.
 - Cut back old foliage in late autumn to encourage fresh growth in spring.
 - Monitor for pests like aphids and spider mites, treating with organic insect control if needed.

Uses
- Water Gardens: Thrives along pond edges, streams, or in bog gardens.
 - Tropical Borders: Adds an exotic, jungle-like feel to moist garden beds.
 - Containers: Grows well in large pots, making it easy to move indoors for overwintering.
 - Rain Gardens: Ideal for wet areas that retain moisture.

Ecological Value
- Pollinators: Occasional flowers attract insects, but the plant is mainly grown for foliage.
 - Erosion Control: The strong root system helps stabilize soil in wet environments.

Considerations
- Cold Hardiness: More frost-tolerant than other Colocasia varieties but still benefits from winter protection in colder climates.
 - Moisture Needs: Requires constant moisture and will not thrive in dry soils.
 - Pests: Watch for aphids, spider mites, and slugs, particularly in humid conditions.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
