Czar, a sizable early-season plum, exhibits a rich dark black/purple hue and possesses beneficial astringency, making it well-suited for culinary purposes. When allowed to fully ripen, it can also be enjoyed fresh. Noteworthy for its unusually large blossom, Czar caught the attention of Victorian fruit enthusiast and author Robert Hogg, who received samples from the growers Rivers of Sawbridgeworth in August 1874, marking its inaugural fruiting year. Hogg, impressed by its quality, dubbed it an "excellent plum." The name "Czar" was bestowed upon it by Rivers in honor of the Czar of Russia's visit to England that same year.
Czar swiftly gained popularity in English gardens, valued for its ease of cultivation and reliability, partly owing to its frost-resistant blossom. While its flavor may not rank as the finest, it stands out as one of the earliest culinary plums of the season. Additionally, the tree adapts well to partial shade and demonstrates hardiness in north-facing conditions.
