Branched stems carry many small, deep steel-blue flower heads, each set in a spiny ruff, and flowers reliably from its first year. Reaching around 80cm, it suits sunny borders, gravel gardens and coastal planting, and is excellent as a fresh or dried cut flower.

Plant in full sun in well-drained, even poor or sandy soil; it tolerates drought and salty coastal conditions once established. Avoid rich, wet soils, which make plants floppy and short-lived. It forms a deep root, so site it where it can stay. Leave stems standing for winter structure and cut back in early spring. Bees and butterflies love the flowers. Wear gloves, as the bracts are prickly.
