Scented flowers open warm orange and age through pink to purple and burgundy, so each spike shows several shades at once. Flowering from spring through late summer over neat mounds of slender dark green leaves, it suits the front of sunny borders, gravel gardens, raised beds and containers.

Grow in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It is borderline hardy, so in colder or exposed gardens mulch the roots and protect with fleece during severe frosts; it may lose some leaves in winter. Trim after flowering to stop it becoming leggy. Like most perennial wallflowers it is short-lived, so take cuttings in summer. Bees and butterflies visit the flowers.
