The rounded, semi-evergreen leaves are pleasantly aromatic when brushed and form a dense, weed-suppressing mat, making it one of the best ground covers for dry shade under trees and shrubs.

Grow in sun or shade in almost any soil that is not waterlogged; it tolerates dry conditions once established and is very hardy. Little care is needed beyond removing tired flower stems and old leaves. Lift and divide in spring or autumn to increase stock or restrict its spread.
