Helleborus niger, the Christmas rose, is a classic winter-flowering perennial with leathery, dark green, divided leaves. From midwinter into early spring it produces large, bowl-shaped, pure white flowers, sometimes flushed pink as they age, held on stout stems. It is ideal for brightening a partly shaded border, woodland planting or a spot near the house where the winter flowers can be enjoyed.
Plant in partial shade in moist but well-drained, fertile soil, ideally neutral to alkaline, in a sheltered position. It is fully hardy. Remove old, tatty leaves in late winter so the flowers are seen clearly, and mulch with leaf mould in autumn. Early bees visit the flowers. All parts are harmful if eaten and the sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when handling and keep away from pets.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
At Lincs Plants, we operate from two main locations. When you place an order, we prepare and pack plants across both sites depending on what you’ve ordered.
Site 1 – Packing and Distribution

Site 2 – Growing Site
This site holds:

Fruit trees
We start processing orders each morning at 8am.
Orders that include items from Site 2 are dispatched the following day.
Orders that only include items from Site 1 are usually dispatched the same day.
During our peak periods, we can process up to 3,000 orders a day across multiple departments. Each department either supports a main packing team or packs orders directly.
We have five collections a day, so orders can leave throughout the day as soon as they’re ready.
During busy times, if we experience any delays, we’ll post updates on our social media and website to give everyone a heads up. This helps keep customers informed if there’s likely to be a delay of a few days.
Planting & Care
Sunlight Requirements
Most pond plants thrive in full sun, with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily for the best growth and flowering.
Planting Pots and Compost
Plant aquatic plants in suitable aquatic baskets using aquatic compost to help support healthy root development and prevent soil from clouding the water.
Planting Depth
Position plants at the correct water depth, as different varieties prefer marginal, shallow, or deep-water conditions.
Oxygen
Water lilies and oxygenating plants help improve water quality, provide shade, and create a healthier environment for fish and wildlife.
