Hemianthus Callitrichoides Cuba -
Hemianthus callitrichoides, commonly known as "Cuba" or "HC," is a popular aquatic plant in the aquarium hobby. Here are its key characteristics:
- Size and Form : Hemianthus callitrichoides is a small, carpeting plant that typically grows to a height of 1-3 centimeters (0.4-1.2 inches). It forms a dense, lush carpet across the substrate.
- Leaves : The leaves are tiny and bright green, with a round or oval shape. They are arranged in opposite pairs along the stem.
- Growth Pattern : It has a creeping growth pattern and spreads horizontally across the substrate, creating a carpet-like appearance.
- Lighting : HC Cuba requires high to very high lighting conditions to thrive. Providing sufficient light is crucial for its growth and vibrant coloration.
- CO2 and Nutrients : It benefits from the addition of injected CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate. Regular fertilization and CO2 supplementation promote healthy growth.
- Tank Conditions : It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 5.5-7.5 and a temperature range of 20-28°C (68-82°F).
- Placement : HC Cuba is often used as a foreground or midground plant due to its small size and creeping growth habit.
- Maintenance : Regular trimming is required to maintain a neat carpet. It's important to prevent it from growing too tall, as this can lead to a less dense carpet.
- Compatibility : It is compatible with a variety of fish and invertebrates. Its dense carpeting provides a natural habitat and hiding place for small fish and shrimp.
- Propagation : It can be propagated by dividing the healthy stems and replanting them in the substrate.
