Its leaves have a bright yellow to greenish-yellow centre that matures to parchment, framed by a blue-green margin. Lily-like flowers are carried on stems just above the low mound in summer. It is a good choice for the front of shady borders, edging and containers.

Grow in partial to full shade in moist, fertile, humus-rich soil; it is hardy in the UK. Mulch in spring to keep the soil moist and protect young shoots from slugs and snails. Remove faded flower stems and cut back the foliage once it dies down in autumn. Clumps can be divided in spring.
