Key Points
Houttuynia cordata, commonly known as Chameleon Plant, Fish Mint, or Heartleaf, is a hardy, herbaceous perennial that is native to East Asia. It is prized for its vibrant, heart-shaped foliage, which often displays striking variegation, and its ability to thrive in damp and aquatic environments. This plant is as versatile as it is ornamental, though it requires careful management due to its vigorous growth.
Description
Houttuynia cordata typically grows to a height of 20–40 cm (8–16 inches) and spreads extensively via underground rhizomes. Its leaves are heart-shaped and measure around 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) in length. The foliage is a standout feature, with colours ranging from green to shades of yellow, red, pink, and purple, depending on the variety and growing conditions. When crushed, the leaves emit a strong, fishy aroma, giving rise to the common name Fish Mint.
In late spring to early summer, the plant produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers surrounded by four prominent white bracts, giving the appearance of delicate blooms. While the flowers are not the primary attraction, they add a subtle charm to the plant's overall aesthetic.
Growing Conditions
Houttuynia cordata thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, fertile soils. It can grow in a variety of conditions, from damp garden beds to shallow water up to 5 cm (2 inches) deep, making it ideal for pond margins and bog gardens. Hardy in UK conditions, it tolerates frost and cold winters, though it may die back to the ground in severe weather, regrowing vigorously in spring.
Varieties
One of the most popular cultivars is Houttuynia cordata 'Chameleon', known for its vibrant, multicoloured leaves that combine shades of green, yellow, orange, and red. This variety is particularly valued for its ornamental appeal in water gardens and mixed planting schemes.
Propagation and Care
The plant is easily propagated by division of rhizomes in spring or autumn. Due to its vigorous growth habit, it can quickly become invasive if left unchecked. To manage its spread, it is often best to grow it in containers or areas with physical barriers.
Uses
In addition to its ornamental value, Houttuynia cordata has culinary and medicinal uses in its native range. The leaves and stems are used in traditional Asian cuisines, particularly in salads and herbal teas, and it has been employed in traditional medicine for its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, care should be taken with its culinary use due to its strong flavour and aroma.
Ecological Value
The dense growth of Houttuynia cordata helps stabilise soil in wet areas, reducing erosion along water margins. Its flowers attract pollinators such as bees, contributing to biodiversity in garden settings.
Cautions
While it is an attractive and versatile plant, Houttuynia cordata can be highly invasive in favourable conditions, particularly in warmer climates. Regular maintenance and strategic placement are essential to keep it from overwhelming other plants.
With its colourful foliage, adaptability, and ecological benefits, Houttuynia cordata is a valuable addition to water gardens and damp landscapes, provided its vigorous growth is carefully managed.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
