Howgate Wonder Apple
The Howgate Wonder apple is a traditional English cooking variety, developed in 1915 by G. Wratten at Howgate Lane, Bembridge, Isle of Wight. A cross between 'Blenheim Orange' and 'Newton Wonder', Howgate Wonder is renowned for its exceptionally large fruits and versatility. The apples feature a pale green to yellow skin flushed with brownish-red, with firm and juicy flesh offering a mild, sweet flavor when ripe. When cooked, it retains its shape, making it ideal for baking. Typically ready for harvest in early October, Howgate Wonder apples store well into the new year, providing a prolonged supply of quality fruit. The tree exhibits good disease resistance and is suitable for various growing conditions. As a partially self-fertile variety in Pollination Group 3, Howgate Wonder can produce some fruit on its own, but the presence of a compatible pollination partner enhances yield and fruit quality. With a mature height of 2–4 meters and a spread of 2–3 meters, depending on the chosen rootstock, Howgate Wonder is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a flavourful and reliable apple variety.
