Iris 'Holden's Child' is a hybrid iris, often sold as Iris pseudacorus 'Holden's Child'. It is a seedling of 'Holden Clough', and the yellow flag iris is thought to be in its background. In May and June it carries dark reddish-purple to deep violet flowers, each with a yellow-orange netted signal, above upright, sword-shaped leaves.

How is it different from the yellow flag iris?
It has deep violet flowers rather than yellow, and it is sterile, so it does not spread by seed. It still forms a strong, fast-growing clump.
Where to plant it
- A pond shelf with 0–10 cm of water over the crown
- Wet soil at the edge of a pond or stream
- Wildlife ponds, where the upright leaves give dragonflies somewhere to perch
How to plant and care for it
Plant in spring or summer in moist to wet soil or shallow water. It copes with being briefly flooded and with short dry spells. Koi may eat it.
Is it poisonous?
Yes. Irises are harmful if eaten by people or pets, so wear gloves when handling it.
Which size should I buy?
