Over a long season it sends up numerous small spikes of flowers that open lime-green, turn lemon yellow and fade to pale cream, giving a soft, two-tone effect. Its small size suits containers, the front of borders and smaller gardens.

Plant in full sun in moist but well-drained soil; it is hardy in most of the UK but should not sit wet over winter. Cut faded spikes at the base to encourage more, and leave the foliage over winter, tidying it in spring. A light mulch helps young plants through their first winter. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators.
