The spikes rise above clumps of narrow, strap-like leaves through summer and into autumn. Use it to add height and strong colour to sunny borders, gravel gardens and hot-coloured planting schemes.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged in winter; it is hardy in most of the UK. Remove spent flower spikes at the base and tidy old leaves in spring rather than autumn, as the foliage helps protect the crown. Established clumps resent disturbance. The nectar-rich flowers are visited by bees.
