In summer long stems carry big, very aromatic heads of deep bluish-purple flowers, held well above the foliage. It is ideal for informal hedges, gravel gardens and large sunny borders, and the flowers are good for drying.

Grow in full sun in well-drained soil; chalk, loam or sand all suit, and it is hardy in most of the UK if not left wet in winter. Cut back flower stems and trim the leafy growth after flowering, avoiding old bare wood, to keep plants dense. Bees and butterflies visit the flowers heavily.
