Key Points
Monarda 'Scorpion' is a bold and dramatic perennial that brings deep reddish-purple flowers and decorative purple bracts to summer displays. From July through September, it bears large, shaggy whorls of tubular, hooked flowers on stiff, upright stems above mid-green aromatic foliage. This cultivar is prized for being more resistant to powdery mildew than many older Monardas, and its tall, imposing habit makes it a striking architectural presence in borders and wildflower or prairie-style plantings.
Ecologically, 'Scorpion' is excellent for pollinator support — bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects are strongly drawn to its abundant nectar. The scented foliage adds fragrance when brushed, and the large flower heads make good cut flowers too. It grows best in full sun to partial shade, in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil, and dislikes both extreme dryness and waterlogging. With regular division every few years and good airflow, it performs reliably in UK gardens.
