Key Points
Nepeta subsessilis is a statuesque, elegant catmint species originating from Japan. It forms upright, loose clumps with strong, square stems topped by spikes of soft, pale lavender-purple flowers from mid-summer into autumn. The large, deeply toothed leaves are a fresh green, aromatic when brushed, and provide good texture and year-round interest even when not in flower. Because of its height and striking form, it makes a great focal or structural plant in mixed borders or for adding height at the back of flowerbeds.
This perennial prefers moist but well-drained soil in partial shade, though it will tolerate sun if the soil remains reasonably moist. It is fully hardy in the UK and relatively low maintenance. Regular deadheading will lengthen the bloom period. Cut back old foliage in spring before new growth begins to keep the plant looking tidy. It also supports wildlife, especially bees and butterflies, and adds ecological value to garden spaces.
