papaver-orientale-nana-allegro-9cm-potted
Papaver orientale 'Nana Allegro'

Papaver orientale 'Allegro', often sold as 'Nana Allegro', is an oriental poppy grown for its large, saucer-shaped flowers of bright orange-scarlet, each petal marked with a dark blotch at the base. The blooms appear in late spring and early summer on bristly stems above hairy, divided leaves. It is a shorter-growing selection, useful for sunny borders, cottage gardens and gravel plantings.

Plant in full sun in deep, well-drained soil; oriental poppies are very hardy and dislike winter wet. The foliage dies down after flowering, leaving a gap, so plant late-summer perennials nearby to fill it; fresh leaves return in autumn. Cut spent stems to the base. Stems can flop in rich soil, so a little support helps. Plants resent disturbance once established.
