The leaves emerge bronze-green in spring, darken to deep bronze-purple in summer and turn red in autumn, on purple-flushed stems. In early summer it produces airy sprays of pale lavender to white tubular flowers. Use it in prairie-style plantings, mixed borders and for contrast with silver or lime foliage.

Grow in full sun, or light shade, in fertile, well-drained soil; it copes with chalk. Hardy throughout most of the UK (RHS H5) and longer-lived than many border penstemons. Remove faded flower stems, or leave them for seedheads, and cut back to about 15cm in late winter or early spring. The basal leaves are evergreen.
