It flowers through summer and into autumn, giving a cool, bright colour that is unusual among penstemons. Grow it in gravel gardens, at the front of sunny borders or in pots on a sunny patio.

Plant in full sun or light shade in very well-drained soil; it tolerates chalk and poor ground but dislikes winter wet. Hardy in most of the UK (RHS H4), though a sheltered, free-draining spot is best in cold areas. Leave the old growth on over winter and trim back in spring once new shoots appear.
