penstemon-purple-passion-9cm-potted
Penstemon 'Purple Passion'

Penstemon 'Purple Passion' is a border penstemon, or beardtongue, with upright stems carrying tiers of rich grape-purple, foxglove-like tubular flowers. It has a long season, flowering from summer well into autumn, and makes a reliable, colourful addition to the middle of a sunny border, cottage gardens and large containers. The blooms are good for cutting.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil, including chalk. Hardy in most of the UK (RHS H4), but it dislikes cold, wet winters, so good drainage is important. Deadhead regularly to keep flowers coming. Leave the old stems over winter for protection and cut back in mid-spring when new growth appears.
