Key Points
Polygonatum falcatum ‘Variegatum’ is a woodland perennial valued for its elegant arching stems and attractive foliage. The leaves are mid-green with creamy white margins, forming striking contrast throughout the growing season. In late spring to early summer the plant bears clusters of small, fragrant, cream-white, bell-shaped flowers that hang from the leaf axils beneath the stems, adding a delicate touch to shaded borders or understorey plantings. After flowering, the foliage may persist until autumn before dying back.
This plant thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and grows best in partial to full shade, where it can develop its spreading habit via rhizomes. Although slow to establish, once settled it forms an elegant, architectural clump that returns reliably each year. It is non-native to the UK and makes a superb choice for woodland gardens, shady corners, or as a striking groundcover beneath trees.
