Is giant cowslip a pond plant?

It is a bog plant, not a water plant. It thrives in wet soil beside ponds and streams. One nursery suggests a shallow pond shelf, but most sources advise wet soil rather than water over the crown.

Where to plant it

  • Bog gardens and wet ground beside a pond or stream
  • Damp borders in sun or part shade
  • Low spots that flood from time to time; the RHS rates it flood-resilient

Is it good for wildlife?

Waterside Nursery says the flowers attract bees, butterflies and hoverflies.

How to plant and care for it

Plant in spring in moist, humus-rich soil. Watch for slugs, aphids and vine weevil.

Which size should I buy?

Bare-root plants (7 cm, 9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre) arrive without a pot or compost and are the most economical way to plant a group. Potted plants (9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre) arrive growing in our peat-free compost and give a faster display. Packs of 3 come in 7 cm, 9 cm, 1 litre and 3 litre bare-root sizes and cost less per plant. The 2x Pot & Compost option is two plants supplied with pots and compost.
