In midsummer, upright stems carry dense, cone-shaped spikes that open from scarlet-red buds into small, pale violet flowers, giving a striking two-tone effect. It is ideal for bog gardens, pond margins, damp shady borders and woodland plantings. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Grow in partial shade in deep, humus-rich, neutral to acid soil that stays reliably moist; it will take sun only if the soil never dries out. Hardy in most of the UK (RHS H5). The leaves appear late in spring, so mark the spot.
