Key Points
Rheum palmatum (Chinese Rhubarb or Ornamental Rhubarb)
Rheum palmatum, commonly known as Chinese Rhubarb or Ornamental Rhubarb, is a bold and dramatic perennial native to China and Tibet. Known for its striking foliage, towering flower spikes, and deep red stems, this architectural plant is perfect for large borders, damp areas, and statement plantings in gardens.
Description
- Height: 150–250 cm (60–100 inches)
- Spread: 100–150 cm (40–60 inches)
- Foliage: The large, deeply lobed, palmate leaves can reach up to 60 cm (24 inches) across. They are dark green with red or purple veins, creating a dramatic display. Young foliage often emerges with a reddish or bronze tint.
- Flowers: Tall, branched spikes of tiny, star-like flowers appear in late spring to early summer (May to June). The flowers can range from white to pink or deep red, depending on the variety.
- Growth Habit: Clump-forming and upright, Rheum palmatum is a statement plant that adds height and texture to any garden.
Growing Conditions
Rheum palmatum thrives in rich, moist soils and is best suited to larger garden spaces where its impressive size can be showcased.
- Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil that retains moisture. It thrives in loamy or clay soils enriched with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure.
- Water: Requires consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. It thrives in damp or boggy conditions but does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.
- Light: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, partial shade helps protect the large leaves from scorching.
This plant is hardy in temperate climates, including the UK, and tolerates frost well.
Propagation and Care
- Division: Propagate by dividing clumps in early spring or autumn. Carefully lift and separate the roots, ensuring each division has buds and roots. Replant in moist, prepared soil.
- Seed: Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in a cold frame. However, plants grown from seed take several years to mature.
-
Routine Care:
- Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially in dry weather.
- Apply a thick mulch of organic matter annually in early spring to retain moisture and enrich the soil.
- Remove spent flower spikes after blooming to direct energy back to the foliage.
- Cut back old or damaged leaves in late autumn or early spring to encourage fresh growth.
Uses
- Ornamental Planting: Ideal as a dramatic focal point in large borders, damp gardens, or naturalized areas.
- Water Gardens: Thrives near ponds, streams, or boggy areas, where its moisture needs can be fully met.
- Companion Planting: Combines well with other bold perennials like gunnera, hostas, or astilbes.
Ecological Value
- Pollinators: The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators during the blooming season.
- Erosion Control: Its large root system helps stabilize soil in wet or sloped areas, reducing erosion.
Considerations
- Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil but struggles in waterlogged or overly dry conditions.
- Space Requirements: Ensure sufficient space for its large, spreading habit.
- Non-Edible: Unlike culinary rhubarb, Rheum palmatum is grown primarily for ornamental purposes and is not typically consumed. The plant contains oxalic acid and can be toxic if ingested in large amounts.

Recycled Growing Media
At Lincs Plants, we’re proud to use a recycled, peat free growing mix that’s made right here in Lincolnshire. It’s made from coir with around 20% silt loam added in.
The coir keeps the mix light and free draining, while the silt loam adds structure and helps hold moisture and nutrients. By recycling used media and using locally sourced materials, we cut down on waste and reduce the need for imported peat based composts.
This home grown mix is part of our commitment to sustainable growing and supporting local production wherever possible.
