Sturdy stems of fleshy blue-green leaves carry large, flat heads of starry flowers that open pink in late summer, deepen to rich rose-red and finally age to coppery brown. The seedheads stand well into winter. Use it in sunny borders, gravel gardens and pots.

Grow in full sun in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil; it is drought tolerant once established and fully hardy. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Leave the dead flowerheads for winter interest and cut back in early spring. Avoid rich soil, which makes stems flop; dividing clumps every few years keeps them upright. The flowers are a valuable late nectar source for bees and butterflies.
